On December 7, 2018 UNESCO granted the status of “objects of enhanced protection” to the Armenian monastery of Geghard and the Upper Azat Valley, as a national value of particular importance to humanity.
In Paris, at the headquarters of UNESCO under the Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict of 1954, a meeting of the 13th Protocol Committee was held, at which a unanimous decision was made to confer such status.
On the territory of Armenia, Geghard Monastery and the Upper Azat Valley became the first cultural value, which was granted the status of “objects of enhanced protection”.
Since 2000, the Geghard Monastery and the Upper Azat Valley are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
In the UNESCO World Heritage list assigned the status of "objects of enhanced protection" included 17 cultural values of particular importance for humanity.
